LOU: The Poet [Poem]
Updated: Jan 7, 2021
Let’s peak into the mind
of a young French-Haitian,
somebody who won’t talk a lot
but loves a conversation
somewhere between sheltered
& a slight bit hood
somebody who’s perspective
can be so
easily misunderstood
“Sticks & stones” ...
the continuation of that term
‘s a little bit absurd,
you’ll learn about
the potency
and power of your words
words can plant a seed,
a tree of life,
or woman pregnant,
but can make somebody
quickly go from King
to feeling peasant
you’ll realize your words
have life
& give meaning,
in the middle of a fight,
if used right is interceding
offers care on sight
sheds light
on misleadings
can be your jean & jacket
when this life
hands us beatings
in the same way,
the words you say
[can] invoke death
won’t kill you instantly
but bring you close,
a couple steps
can be the kind of pain
where you can
feel it in your chest
like alcohol to a cut
but a bandaid
to the bleeding
in case you were misreading
the last verse’s mystery
to be diffused
(& please excuse
my poor delivery)
let’s take a step
back
into that stanza
& dissect
just what I was saying
so you’re not
feeling perplexed
the pain you might’ve felt
in your chest
it rings true,
somebody might’ve said something
to really hurt you
or maybe disrespect,
nonetheless, still truth
it’s INTERNAL & nobody hurts
exactly how you do
the pain from alcohol
yes, it burns
but serves a purpose,
EXTERNAL, so
there're others that can
see which flaws
are surfaced
Reprimanding &
corrections
you might see
(at first) a weapon
but should you
claim "real",
just chill
& take the lesson
if someone else can see it
take a second & process it
of course the way they come off,
sure can heighten up the tension
the scrutiny
& insecurity
could rob ya blessings
but like alcohol,
the burn
would only lure
a couple seconds
To finish off this poem
these were thoughts
& I just wrote em
don’t speak in conversation
‘fore people say
I’ve over spoken
the power of a word.
just what you say AND how it’s spoken
& how much of your mind
you can provoke to be more open
I must admit that, convos,
yes, can be
more thought-provoking,
I have yet to find a way [to]
digress the pain
like ibuprofen
verbally, need work
& my best friend has been
these notes and...
I'm working on my tone
[so]till
further notice,
I’m a Poet.
